Skin Cancer Linked To Boom In Low-Cost Package Holidays

$

You might want to rethink that all-inclusive holiday you've booked - experts at Cancer Research UK suggest the 1960s boom in cheap package vacations may be the cause of an increased skin cancer rate.

The charity made the claim following the release of data suggesting elderly people are now seven times more likely to suffer from skin cancer than people of the same age were in the 1970s.

A study suggests 5,700 pensioners are diagnosed with melanoma - the deadliest form of skin disease - now compared with around 600 cases per year in the seventies.

Getting sunburnt once every two years is thought to be enough to cause skin cancer

The disease is largely preventable by covering up or using a strong suncream, but Cancer Research UK think the rise, which has been seen particularly in over-65s, may be due to a lack of knowledge combined with a boom in cheap package holidays.

Sue Deans, a 69-year-old mother and retired teacher, has been diagnosed with malignant melanoma twice since the turn of the millennium.

She said: "I was part of the generation when package holidays became affordable and you could go abroad nearly every year.

"I don't think there was much understanding at the time about the impact that too much sun can have on your risk of getting skin cancer.

"And I loved the sun but suffered quite a bit of sunburn over the years."

All-inclusive holidays became more popular, cheaper, and more available in the 1960s

Professor Richard Marais of Cancer Research UK said: "It is worrying to see melanoma rates increasing at such a fast pace, and across all age groups.

"It is important people keep an eye on their skin and seek medical opinion if they see any changes to their moles or even to normal areas of skin.

"Melanoma is often detected on men's backs and women's legs but can appear on any part of the body."

Around 13,300 people are diagnosed with the disease every year in the UK alone, and 2,100 people per year lose their lives each year.

Dr Julie Sharp, Cancer Research UK’s head of health information, said: "Sun damage accumulates over time so avoiding sunburn – and sunbeds – is key as well as getting to know your skin type so you don’t overdo it on the beach or even in the garden.

"You can burn at home just as easily as you can on holiday, so remember to spend time in the shade, wear a T-shirt and a hat to protect your skin and regularly apply sunscreen that is at least factor 15 and has four stars. Swapping bad sun habits for good ones could save your life."

A town in Florida has their own real-life Easter bunny.

Lee Hardy, a resident of Palmetto, spends the whole year shopping and crafting to put together hundreds of Easter gift baskets for needy children.

"People around here don’t really celebrate Easter," Hardy told The Huffington Post. "It’s my favorite holiday and I love to share it, especially with people who need it."

Although she receives some donations from local groups, the toys and Bible books that fill the baskets mostly come out of her own pocket.

"When I have a little extra money, I take it to the dollar store and buy stuff for the baskets," she said. "That’s just what I do."

Hardy makes around 500 of the seasonal gifts every year, inviting local disadvantaged kids into her home to pick their own present.

This is the ninth year of her charitable endeavour, and she hopes to make 1,000 baskets per year soon.

Chester The Pittie Finally Finds A Home After 5 Year Wait And One Incredible Photo

For five long years Chester the Pittie had waited for someone to give him a home after he was found on the streets and housed in a shelter.

Despite the fact he "loves all people", he was repeatedly passed over in favour of other dogs.

Eventually Gabby Stroup, manager of the North Fork Animal Welfare League in New York where he lived, posted this adorable and slightly heartbreaking photo on their Facebook page...

Poor Chester is still waiting 5 years being overlooked!! He is a sweet guy who loves to lay on the couch. He likes most other dogs . 631-765-1811 ext 1 or manager@nfawl.org

Posted by The North Fork Animal Welfare League, Inc/Southold Animal Shelter on Wednesday, April 1, 2015

Stroup said: "It was crazy. I posted the original photo on the League’s Facebook page and by later that day there were over 6000 shares.

"Someone suggested I make him his own page and I did, at about 3:30 p.m., and that evening there were close to 2000 likes."

And it paid off - hundred of people across the US phoned to enquire about Chester.

And here he is with his new family...

And it could have a knock-on effect for some of the other pooches at the shelter.

They told the Huffington Post: "We have had a large increase in the volume of phone calls and emails. We are hoping this transfers into adoptions for some of our other long term residents."

Hurrah!

Nicole Kidman Draws Fire Over Her Role With Etihad Airways 'At Odds With Her UN Women Goodwill Role'

Nicole Kidman is the latest star to run into controversy by appearing in a big-budget ad for a corporation with deep pockets.

Nicole was named the face of Etihad Airways last month. Now, following her appearance in a luxurious advertisement for the airline's new Airbus A380, the Oscar winner has been the recipient of an open letter from the President of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, claiming a contradiction between Nicole's relationship with Etihad, and her position as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Women.

In the letter, APFA president Laura Glaring tells Nicole:

"The United Arab Emirates and their airlines are well-known in our industry for their discriminatory labour practices and deplorable treatment of female employees.

nicole kidman
Nicole Kidman is the star of Etihad's ad for its brand new Airbus A380

"We saw that you had begun appearing in a new campaign for Etihad, a company that the Wall Street Journal has publicly reported 'may fire women if they become pregnant' and forces flight attendants to live in 'confinement' in secure compounds.

Laura Glaring asks of Nicole, “We urge you, on behalf of the women and girls that you spoke of so eloquently [on International Women's Day], not to play a part in promoting Etihad Airways, a company that imposes abusive labour practices on its female employees and whose sole owner is a government that stands against the very world that you imagine.”

nicole kidman
Nicole has not yet publicly responded to the letter from the AFPA

In response to the letter, Etihad have asserted that there are, in fact, maternity packages in place for their female staff employed for more than a year, that pregnant personnel are allowed to continue working on the ground, and that they treat all staff with "dignity and respect".

There has been no public response yet from Nicole Kidman, who has held her ambassadorial position with the UN since 2006.

She is not the first star to wade into political waters with a screen appearance for a product. Scarlett Johansson famously drew public wrath for appearing in an ad for Sodastream, an Israeli company with a factory in the West Bank. Scarlett quickly resigned from her Oxfam role, and later said she had no regrets over her decision.

And here are just a few more controversial moments…

How To Prevent Smelly Feet: Tips And Tricks For Battling Bodily Odours This Summer

$
0
0
The sun is out and our thoughts are inadvertently wandering to beer gardens, long walks in the countryside and - um - sweaty feet.

The thing is, as the temperature soars, so too does the probability of feet becoming fairly whiffy over the coming months.

But before you bulk-buy on foot spray, read up on these cheaper (and far more natural) hygiene hacks to help keep your tootsies from smelling like vintage cheese this summer.

1) Shower smart

Do you make an effort to wash your feet when you shower? And if so, do you rub soap between your toes? If not, then this could be the cause of your foot odour due to a build-up of bacteria.

Pay extra attention to your feet when showering and this could eliminate any embarrassing smells.

2) Stay dry

It's super important to keep your feet dry, particularly after showering. Instead of leaving your feet to dry naturally, make sure that you towel-dry between your toes.

Additionally, add some talcum powder to your tootsies to keep them feeling fresh and to prevent fungus from building up and causing conditions such as Athlete's Foot.

3) Let your feet and shoes breathe

If you can get away with wearing sandals and flip flops in the summer months then do so, as this gives your feet a chance to breathe and reduces the likelihood of bacteria build-up.

Additionally, if you're still wearing closed-toe shoes such as trainers and boots, then it's worth letting them air outside before popping them back in your wardrobe at the end of the day.

4) Wear socks

They might be a nightmare to pair up after a wash, however wearing socks could help immensely when it comes to battling stinky feet.

This is because they absorb the sweat that naturally occurs on your feet.

5) Rubbing alcohol

If the previous steps don't work, then perhaps it's time to hit your nearest pharmacy in search of something a little stronger.

Try washing your feet with rubbing alcohol, as this acts as an antiseptic and helps to dry out any sweat.

You can also disinfect your shoes with the stuff, but make sure you let them dry out properly before wearing them again.

6) Try an Epsom salt soak

Pamper your paws with a homemade foot soak.

Grab a bowl and fill it with water. For every two pints of water you use, add two tablespoons of Epsom salt.

Then, sit back, relax and soak your feet for 10-15 minutes.

Game Of Thrones Actress Emilia Clarke Defends 'Sexist' Portrayal Of Women: 'We Accept Our Femininity'

Game of Thrones fans have learned to expect a few things in (almost) every episode: incest, dragons and naked women.

The HBO show, based on George RR Martin's epic fantasy novels, has long divided opinion among viewers and commentators, with many questioning whether the show is feminist or sexist.

But now actress Emilia Clarke - who plays mother of dragons Daenerys Targaryen - has praised the show for creating female characters which "accept our femininity".

game of thrones

Speaking of the upcoming fifth series, the actress told Radio Times magazine that female characters become stronger than ever in the new episodes.

"You start to see all of the women in the show accepting who they are and embodying that with such power that it's palpable," she said.

"I think that's the beauty of the show: as women, we accept our femininity and take strength from it, as opposed to trying to hide it and behave in a masculine way."

Clarke's comments come after some accused Game of Thrones of being misogynistic, while others said directors had encouraged "constant gratuitous ogling" of women in previous series.

"Very few of the sex or nude scenes have meant anything in terms of the narrative or character development. And those that have don't see the men in their birthday suits," Sam Moore wrote on Yahoo! TV last year.

"Yes, the world in which Game of Thrones takes place is terribly patriarchal, more so than the real world, but I can think of much better and original ways to show gender inequality than to strip the oppressed of their clothes and turn them, unironically into sex objects for the panting audience."

Confetti is available to buy for €5 with all proceeds going to Yes Equality, an organisation supporting gay marriage ahead of Irish Marriage Equality Referendum on 22 May.

Dove Inspires People To Choose Beautiful In New Social Experiment

A brilliantly simple experiment/marketing campaign from beauty specialists at Dove has taken a look at how women across the world view themselves.

Signs above doorways in shopping centres in San Francisco, Shanghai, Delhi, London and Sao Paulo marked each as either "Beautiful" or "Average".

A camera crew recorded reactions, with many people stumbling and hesitating when given the choice. One woman in Sao Paulo even turned around when she saw the signs, seemingly uncomfortable choosing one.

Dove used the experiment to bolster its #ChooseBeautiful campaign, which encourages women to think more about how their beauty choices make them feel.

"Women make thousands of choices each day - related to their careers, their families, and, let’s not forget, themselves," the company said in a statement.

"Feeling beautiful is one of those choices that women should feel empowered to make for themselves, every day."

According to another Dove study, 96% of women wouldn't use the word "beautiful" to describe themselves, which makes it promising to see how many women chose that door over the "average" one in their latest experiment.

One Of Britain's Youngest Transgender Children Offers A Fascinating Insight Into Her Life As A Girl (After Being Born Male)

Following on from Louis Theroux's 'Transgender Kids' documentary which aired this Easter, one of Britain's youngest transgender children has revealed exactly how it feels to switch gender - after being born male.

Offering a fascinating insight into the mind of a child who wants nothing more than to be a girl, 'Lily', 6, reveals to BBC News that she'd always wanted to wear girl's clothes and had known all along that becoming female would make her "happier".

"Now I'm living as a girl, I feel much better," she adds, while drawing a picture of herself in a pink dress.

transgender kids

'Lily', who is one of the youngest transgender children in the UK, says that she felt "a bit sad and cross" when she found out that she'd have to wear boys clothes to school.

The six-year-old was born with gender dysphoria, which is described by the NHS as being a condition where a person experiences "discomfort or distress" because of a mismatch between their biological sex and gender identity.

It's been estimated that between 2% and 5% of the population experience some form of this.

'Lily' confesses that when she wears girl's clothes, it made her feel "much better". And when asked if she'd want to become a boy again as she grows older, she replies matter-of-factly: "No."

A documentary on BBC2, which aired over Easter Bank Holiday weekend, delved behind the issues surrounding transgender children, particularly with them making such life-changing decisions at a very young age.

The show followed the story of Camille, 6, who was born Sebastian. Just like any other six-year-old girl: she loves dressing up, playing with Barbies and her favourite Disney characters are Elsa from Frozen and The Little Mermaid's Ariel.

The only differing factor is that she was born male.

When asked about her life before becoming Camille, she exclaims: “Everyone was calling me Sebastian, but I was a girl. I used to have girl pyjamas with Minnie Mouse on them and I used to sleep in them.”

Camille, who lives in California, has been given varying treatment options including psychological counselling and hormone blockers. Eventually, she will even be able to opt to have gender reassignment surgery.

But in the UK, treatments such as hormone blockers are not prescribed to transgender children until they hit puberty - usually at the age of 16. But is this too late?

In response to the documentary, many people tweeted their shared belief that it's important for children to be able to speak for themselves, rather than their parents doing it for them. With many believing that, in this case, a child's happiness is paramount.

But there were also those who disagreed with the fact that children so young are being "allowed" to make these life-changing decisions by their parents.

With some even questioning why these children know what the term 'transgender' means.

It's no secret that transgender young people are more at risk from mental health issues - with nearly half (48%) of young transgender people considering suicide, according to the Adult Psychiatry Morbidity Survey.

It also found that 59% of transgender people under the age of 26 had contemplated suicide and 30% had attempted it in the past year.

Starbucks Employees Will Get Free Four-Year College Tuition Paid For Them

Starbucks has announced a radical new incentive to work for them in an attempt to "redefine the role and responsibility of a public company".

The US java giant is handing out free four-year university bachelor's degree courses to any American employee who wants to enroll in Arizona State University's online learning program.

The company is setting aside $250 million to pay for their staff's education, which cost an average of $60,000 per person.

Senior staff members at the company believe this is an example of their attempt to "redefine" their image and the scheme will help them "attract and retain good people".

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said: "Consumers want to choose those companies that have like-minded values as them. By giving our partners access to four years of full tuition coverage, we provide them with a critical tool for a lifelong opportunity.

"The unfortunate reality is that too many Americans can no longer afford a college degree, particularly disadvantaged young people, and others are saddled with burdensome education debt.

"We're stronger as a nation when everyone is afforded a pathway to success."

More than 144,000 US workers will be eligible for the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, which is only available to staff who work more than 20 hours a week.

The new plan is an expansion of a scheme launched in 2014 where the company agreed to pay up to two years tuition for anyone wanting to finish a college degree they had already started.

Arizona State University offers to discount a large chunk of the tuition cost for Starbucks employees, with the company fielding the rest of the bill. The agreement was made on the basis Starbucks would not advertise or promote any other university to its workers or customers.

Shocking 'I Hate My Thighs' Baby Grow No Longer For Sale Thanks To This Viral Photo

A baby grow emblazoned with the shocking slogan 'I Hate My Thighs' is no longer for sale thanks to an outcry on social media.

One man, his camera and Facebook have proven that we all, as individuals, have the power to change things that simply aren't acceptable, such as this deplorable example of body shaming for very young girls.

Jason Evans took a picture of the purple baby grow hanging next to a blue one with the slogan 'I'm Super' in New York University's Bookstore.

He posted it on Facebook with the message: "I had a very difficult time not raging out about this in the college store. These are onesies…for infants…guess which one is for girls and which one is for boys. THIS is the problem."

I had a very difficult time not raging out about this in the college store. These are onesies...for infants...guess which one is for girls and which one is for boys. THIS is the problem.

Posted by Jason Y. Evans on Thursday, 2 April 2015

Within just five days Evans's post had been shared more than 16,500 times.

"Talk about starting the body issues young," wrote one commenter.

Another added: "Seriously! One of the cutest things about babies are the chubby thighs!! Come on people!"

Jason added in a later comment:

"I have seriously tried to figure out how to write an email that isn't a complete rant about this to the powers that be internally.

"I don't want to come off as insane, and I also know there are some people who obviously think this sort of thing is harmless.

"How do you calmly explain to the people who run the bookstore how wrong this is? This is testing my abilities, really."

But he needn't have worried, before long a number of people who had seen this photo called the shop asking for the baby grow to be removed, and the NYU Bookstore promptly complied.

"It was our oversight, and we have removed the item from the sales floor, they wrote in a message on their Facebook page.

The offensive baby grow was created by baby clothing company Wry Baby, and this wasn't the first time the design had some under criticism.

On 18 March 2015 Michele Kort, editor of American feminist publication Ms Magazine, wrote about it in a blog piece:

"Yes, we know—it’s meant to be funny. After all, the company that sells this onesie with the saying 'I Hate My Thighs' is named Wry Baby. And we feminists do have a sense of humor.

"But really, there’s something icky about projecting fat awareness on babies...

"The Wry Baby website deems this “a tiny statement regarding self-image.” Hahaha. Actually, it’s a pretty large statement for a 10-pounder to be making—a harbinger of things to come later in a child’s life, especially if that child is a girl."

Following customer complaints, the baby grow was pulled from Wry Baby's online store.

The 78-year-old from Stourbridge, West Midlands had modelled as a teenager back in the fifties to help pay the bills. One of the jobs included a stint on the cover of Span Magazine (the lad's mag of yesteryear) when she was 17.

When asked how she came across the raunchy vintage snap, Dunn revealed: “My friend always picks up a copy of the Sunday Mercury for me, and I was flicking through it last month, and I just could not believe my eyes.

"I started screaming ‘that’s me, that’s me’."

“There was a picture of me from Span magazine in 1955 relating to a story about a man who is selling lots of these old magazines now. I had almost forgotten all about the picture, but I think it’s great," she added.

Helen is pictured on the front of issue four, in a snowy winter scene, wearing just a hat and some white knickers, using a large woolly hand muff to cover her breasts.

“I can still remember the photo shoot, the photographer was a gentleman, a very nice man," she said. "There was nothing iffy about him at all."

And the thrifty Gran added that she was constantly making her own outfits for the shoots, and even her own props: "I always made my own outfits, even the umbrellas. The picture was originally for a Christmas calendar."

The grandmother-of-two attended photo shoots for about a year, under the pseudonym Sherry Morris.

During that time she was courting her boyfriend (and now husband) Alan who later went on to play football for Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Alan, who was in the RAF when Dunn began modelling, was regularly teased by his mates for his wife's racy shoots.

The couple married in 1957 and Dunn then went on to work at a doctor’s surgery as a receptionist for 27 years near to where they lived in Kinver, Staffordshire.

She had kept the cuttings from her days as a model, but it still took the mother-of-two by complete surprise when the familiar magazine cover resurfaced in her local Sunday newspaper.

While some parents might've been concerned by their daughter attending the raunchy photoshoots, Dunn insists that her parents were perfectly fine with it.

“The money was very, very good. Two pounds an hour and the shoots usually took two hours. And it was very good for my parents because I gave it straight to them," she said.

“Dad was a miner and I can remember him coming home with a £5 note. That was his wages."

And despite her husband's aversion to his wife's time in front of the camera, Dunn is proud of her brief modelling career.

"Back in the day, I wasn’t bad looking and didn’t have a bad figure," she said. “I chose the name Sherry Morris because my great-great gran was a Morris. And Sherry sounded so glamorous.

"I really enjoyed it. It was like a whim that kind of took off for about a year or 18 months."

And now she hopes it'll give other older women a boost: "I want elderly women to see it now and think ‘ah well, there’s life in the old dog yet’. Hopefully it will give them a lift."

Street artist Candie Bandita has shared the story of a less-than-normal proposal she was involved in completely by chance.

The West London-based graffitist was approached by a man in the street who said he had brought his girlfriend from Paris to London to propose and wanted some help.

Obliging the Frenchman's request, Candie sprayed "Will you marry me Fedwa?" on a wall in beautiful urban cursive. She later received a text with a picture captioned "she could not say no".

The ecstatic boyfriend (now fiancé) sent Candie a series of texts to express his gratitude, prompting her to share the inspiring and heartfelt messages on Instagram.

His proposal appears to have been sprayed onto a wall at a designated graffiti area near Waterloo.

When Adam Richman, known for gluttonous eating challenges on Man Versus Food, debuted his new slimmed-down physique in a naked photo shoot for Cosmopolitan last year, we almost spat out our kale salad.

But now he has another culinary bomb to drop. Richman, the man known for scoffing piles of chicken wings and burgers, has gone vegan and has been for the past three months.

Talk about a man of extremes.

Before and after: Richman lost 70Ilbs last year

The lifestyle change comes as part of his commitment to Soccer Aid, a UNICEF celebrity football match. The charity are working to reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger in 2015 - and this is his way of contributing.

In an interview with The Independent about his new TV show Man Finds Food, he explained that while his veganism may only be temporary, it has made him rethink how he consumes meat.

“Because I’m training for football right now, I’ve been vegan for the past three months or so. And for Soccer Aid I went 100% vegan," he said. "Now does that mean I’m not going to have a steak? No I absolutely will when I want to, but it’s just about picking and choosing my spots, and when I want to have that cow and I wanna have that bacon, I’m going to make it count, I’m going to make it great quality.”

Adam lost the weight by eliminating white flour and dairy from his diet and threw out peanut butter and ice cream - his two favourites - instead buying healthy snacks. He favours eating small, 150-calorie meals every two hours, and now - rather than a ginormous burger, his favourite diet foods include almonds, Greek yogurt and salmon.

Alongside a diet change he also ramped up his exercise routine from a sedate 30-minute amble on the treadmill to weight training and football practice. He also makes sure he walks 10,000 steps each day.

London's First Ever Açaí Berry Bowl Pop-Up, Oshun Café, Has Opened (And It's What Hipster Dreams Are Made Of)

It's the purple berry that packs a health punch.

And now you can purchase bowls of the stuff at a new Açaí berry bowl pop-up in London, which opens on 8 April.

Following on from the theme of taking one type of food and selling the crap out of it - yes, there have been porridge, cereal and fried-food themed joints - Oshun Café is the latest establishment to jump onto the single food bandwagon.

But the café, which is open for one month only, might actually have some viable business clout - especially as the only item on their menu is one of the trendiest super foods du jour.

If you've never come across it before, and you're currently wondering how on earth you even say it, Açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is an Amazonian fruit from Brazil.

Despite being consumed for thousands of years by Brazilians, the berry only recently made its way across the Atlantic.

Packed with 19 amino acids, Açaí is also rich in cell-protecting antioxidants (three times higher than goji berries and 10x higher than blueberries) and scores low on the glycemic index (meaning it burns energy slowly).

Meanwhile the berry bowl craze has taken the UK by storm - just search the phrase on Instagram and you'll find 3,000 plus photographs of carefully presented breakfast bowls.

While the idea itself seems exciting, there's only a limited selection of berry bowls available - and when we say limited, we mean four options.

:: Oshun Native, with Açaí, banana and honey.

:: Oshun Tang, with courgette, lime, sour cherries and Açaí pulp.

:: Oshun Kong, with "flavours from the orient" such as banana, lemongrass, ginger, coriander and honey.

:: Oshun Maya, with Açaí berries, raw cacao, cinnamon, orange and avocado.

The bowls are priced at £6 each - so while they're great for your health, they're not so friendly on the bank balance.

Founder of Oshun Café, Liane Holey, reveals precisely why she believes London needs a slice of the Açaí-tion: "Brazil’s streets are filled with vendors blending Açaí pulp with fresh bananas and then topped with honey and granola to create an innocuously addictive berry bowl.

"We want the UK to celebrate this way of eating Açaí, not as powder, dried supplements or in smoothies and pasteurised juices which have significantly smaller amounts of Açaí and preserved nutrients.”

And if you don't live near London - or don't fancy the hefty price tag, then try making your own berry bowl at home using these delicious recipes...
