Feminist Beer Aims To Tackle Gender Stereotypes And Put An End To 'Objectifying' Beer Adverts

When women appear in beer adverts, they tend to either be wearing bikinis and playing volleyball on a beach or winking seductively at a man across a bar.

They very rarely drink any beer themselves.

But, funnily enough, it's not just men or enjoy a nice cool pint on a warm day.

That's why a brewery in Brazil has launched Cerveja Feminista - a beverage that challenges the stereotype that beer is a "man's drink".

Bottles of Cerveja Feminista feature a definition of the word "feminism" as well a symbol for gender equality.

The product was the brainchild of activism group 65|10, whose name was inspired by a study that showed 65% of women in Brazil do not feel that adverts represent them fairly.

Speaking to fastcoexit.com, the group's founder Thais Fabris describes women who appear in typical beer ads: "She is either the waitress in the bar, a girl on the beach, or a prize the men get for drinking that beer.

"For us, it has many dangerous aspects, since it objectifies women and enables sexual harassment on a daily basis, on mass media. Even craft beers, which are also becoming more popular here, follow that path, with names like 'Fatlicious' or 'Forbidden Lady.'"

Last year, many accused a Heineken advert that aired on TV in Brazil during the European Championship of being sexist.

The advert - which was made in partnership with the shoe store Shoestock - offered women a 50% discount on shoes during the football match so that they'd leave their men in peace to watch the game.

And it's not just beer adverts in Brazil that are rubbing feminists up the wrong way.

Here in the UK, a Courage beer advert was banned that showed a woman trying on a figure-hugging dress. A man - who looked unimpressed - appeared under the slogan "take Courage my friend".

Fabris created the new feminist beer as she believes adverts such as these shape the way people in society see themselves and each other.

"If we can stop advertising that stereotypes women, we are changing an important part of our culture," she said.

"It does not solve all the problem of machismo, of course - it has very deep roots in our culture. But it is one less part of this culture enabling this behavior, and that is a really important step."

#FreeTheNipple: Women Across Iceland Bare Their Breasts In Support Of Feminist Student Who Was Trolled Online

The censorship of women's bodies has been hot topic since summer 2014 when the #FreeTheNipple movement first began.

Fast-forward to the present day and, while the movement has a legion of celebrity supporters and is the subject of a feature film, women are still being censored on social media and in public.

Is This Bikini The Best Reaction To #FreeTheNipple?

Recently the hashtag started trending again, after a 17-year-old female student was trolled for posting a topless photo online.

Adda Þóreyjardóttir Smáradóttir, chairperson of the Feminist society at The Commercial College of Iceland, announced an upcoming “Free the Nipple” day at her school for 26 March to show support for the anti-censorship movement.

Her and a male friend posted separate photos of their nipples on social media. And lo and behold, while Smáradóttir received no backlash, she became the target of online trolls.

“It was difficult and I had to delete the picture for a few minutes, but it was enough to start a revolution,” she wrote in a Facebook post written in Icelandic, according to The Independent.

Before long the hashtag was trending with hundreds of Twitter users tweeting their bare breasts in solidarity.

The war against the censorship of women's bodies rages on, but this time it was clear who won the battle...

London's Best Fish And Chips

Done right - crisp golden batter, fluffy chunky chips, the option of mushy peas plus a sprinkling of vinegar - fish n' chips is comfort food at its best.

It may be a dish that brings to mind the British seaside, but London can stake a claim to being home to one of the first dining establishments to serve fish with chips - as a fish n' chip shop opened within the sound of Bow Bells in East London around 1860.

So for those who want to sample the British speciality in its (probable) hometown, we've rounded up the best fish n' chip joints in London.

Heartbreaking Stories Of Homeless Women Reveal Startling Insight Into Their Lives

The last time you walked down the street and spotted a homeless person - did you notice their gender?

I have to admit, I'd been ignorant to it until I came across former pianist, Anne Naysmith's obituary in February. The homeless woman, also known as 'the car lady of Chiswick', had been killed tragically in a road accident aged 77.

Naysmith - who I'd never heard of prior to this terrible news - had lived in a dilapidated car in Chiswick, London, for 26 years after being evicted from her home. Prior to that, she'd been a talented pianist who performed Rachmaninov’s Preludes Op 23 to the masses at Wigmore Hall.

Naysmith's story got me thinking about women living on the streets. Mainly - what lives did these women lead before they arrived on this rocky road?

After digging a little deeper into the matter of women and homelessness, it became apparent that among the single homeless population, women are very much in the minority.

In fact in England, they make up just 26% of those helped by homelessness services.

On the face of it, this is great news. But why is this the case? Are there actually less homeless women?

Or is there a group of women who remain invisible, hidden away from the statistics and head counts of homelessness shelters and living in dangerous situations that could put their lives at risk?

Startling facts issued by homeless charity Crisis reveal that there are high levels of vulnerability within the female homeless population, with various issues plaguing women such as mental illness, drug and alcohol dependencies, childhoods spent in care, experiences of sexual abuse and other traumatic life experiences.

When Crisis interviewed some of the women they helped, they found - rather despairingly - that 20% of them had become homeless in order to escape violence from someone they knew.

The majority of these women (70%) were fleeing from a partner.

Homeless women are also more likely to have greater levels of mental illness than men, says the charity, often as a result of physical and sexual abuse.

Additionally, their research shows that women who sleep rough are often in danger of being subjected to physical attacks, as well as verbal and sexual abuse.

Seeing no way out of their situation, 28% of homeless women have formed an unwanted sexual partnership and 20% have engaged in sex work - just to keep a roof over their heads.

On a smaller, more localised scale, the Telford Crisis Network's, Jake Bennett, says there's a fairly even split between the people they help.

However there are still less women that use the service - 43.9% are female compared to 56.1% who are male.

Bennett suggests a few reasons why this may be: "I think it's because women are more resilient," Bennett tells HuffPost UK Lifestyle. "They know the importance of having their own support group of friends. Women also communicate better and are willing to share more of what is going on in their lives with their support group.

"Men tend to hold back on anything that shows them to be weak," he adds. "Also, women actively seek out help prior to a situation getting worse whereas men might take a little longer to come to terms with a situation."

In the past nine years, one homelessness centre - who kindly provided the stories below - reported an increase from 7.7% to 23.5% in the number of homeless women they assisted.

"A number of these women are leaving care," a spokesperson for the centre tells HuffPost UK Lifestyle. "Some of the women have complex problems and have exhausted the resources of many but they still remain extremely vulnerable."

Some of the stories behind these women are heartbreaking, and involve histories of sexual abuse and neglect from their families. Others suffer from mental illnesses or learning difficulties. They refuse help, drifting haphazardly from bad situation to worse.

There are also those who just happen to be having a run of bad luck. One woman lost her job and ended up living out of her car, which proves that really, it could happen to anyone.

Here are their stories...

While some of these stories have uncertain endings, there are some who do end up in a happier place and are able to access help.

Often, women are able to get help if they are pregnant or have dependent children, says Tim Davies from Crisis. This is because they meet council criteria for being in ‘priority need’, which means councils have a duty to house them.

With the help of the Telford Crisis Network, Jake Bennett reveals that one girl who was sleeping rough under some railway arches was also able to get back on her feet.

"We found her and, with the help of other charities, managed to access accommodation, clothing and food for her," he says. "Shortly after we'd found her, the girl found out that she was pregnant.

"I can't begin to imagine how she would've coped if she'd still been sleeping rough while pregnant, it would've been absolutely awful. But thanks to our help, she's now had a baby, they're both fine and most importantly, they're safe."

The next step for homeless women, says Jon Sparkes, chief executive of Crisis, is that "we urgently need a review of the law in England so that no-one is forced to sleep rough".

"We need to ensure that funding is protected for women-only services where people can feel safe and comfortable accessing support.”

Daylight Saving Time Is Making Us Less Healthy And Costing The Earth, Scientists Say

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is making people unhealthier and costing our economies billions, a group of scientists have said.

The academics argued against DST in a statement to the European Parliament, ahead of many time zones going an hour a head in the early hours of this Sunday.

In a paper prepared for MEPs this week, they said that advancing the clock for half of the year worsened "social jet lag" - defined as the time between when you would naturally wake up and the time you are obliged to wake up - and this increases the likelihood of diabetes or obesity because our body's metabolism is out of sync.

They also said accidents and heart attacks increase in the days after a changeover.

The academics, who came from universities in Germany, France, the UK, The Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Hungary, estimated this costs the European Union 131 billion euros a year in health costs.

"Our biological clocks are synchronised using the timing and amount of light and darkness - not the alarm clock," their statement, which was presented to a European Parliament hearing, said.

"As a result our biology does not respond to DST changes. Rather, with the spring DST, we simply have to go to work an hour earlier relative to our biological clock. We are adding an extra hour of social jet lag to the European population."

SEE ALSO:

Prof Till Roenneberg, from the Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich, told The Huffington Post UK that he believed the actual cost to the EU economy was higher than estimated because 131 billion euros stemmed from a study that did not take account of all the potential health problems.

He said every hour of social jetlag boosted a person's likelihood of becoming obese by 33%. He told HuffPost: "We know, with social jet lag, you get metabolic problems. You become too fat because you metabolise differently... You are more likely to develop diabetes type 2."

He added: "You have an internal clock that's optimised to a certain individual timing. It gives you the best window to sleep, its physiology says 'this is a window where I cram down all the metabolic pathways and reactions that are necessary for digesting food'.

"But you're eating at times [during DST] when your whole digestive metabolism is not prepared for efficiently eating food. That's why [your body] says, 'ok, I have food here, can't do much with it at the moment, so I store it'."

He compared the social jet lag of DST to the jet lag of flying from the UK to New York, which is five hours behind.

Story continues beneath slideshow

"Take that jet lag, divide it by five... Now do that chronically every day because you are never leaving...That's the impact," he said.

"The clock doesn't change, all you do is go to work an hour earlier. You go to work in timezone one over to the east. You have to work to that social timezone but you stay in Britain, if you had to work according to Budapest time or Prague time, in Britain you would have to get up an hour earlier every day without ever leaving Britain and you're clock would not adjust... The fact that your clocks adjust flying to the US or flying back is because you are flying into a new light/dark cycle.

"But if you now go to work on Budapest time but you never go to Budapest, you stay in London, you have a chronic jet lag that never, ever is relieved."

Prof Roenneberg described DST as "very cunning", adding: "It claims that it changes time but all it does is to tell everybody to go work an hour earlier.

"Now imagine if a government would suddenly decide to tell people to go work an hour earlier, they would never get through with that.

"It's nothing else but a dictation that we all go to work an hour earlier but so that we don't get an uprising, we change the clocks. So as if, they don't notice."

When asked if most chronobiologists supported the abolition of DST, he said: "Oh yes, many chronobiologists. If you're an early type, you like DST because it means you wake up early and you're now allowed to go work early, you're home earlier. But in a more flexible system you could do that anyhow."

He added moving the whole population an hour ahead without choice was "what is so devastating because, in the majority of people, it has health consequences".

Prof Martha Merrow testifies before the MEPs on behalf of the chronobiologists

Daylights Savings Time is regulated by an European Union directive, which stipulates all member states who take part in switch forward and back at the same time - 1am UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) on the last Sundays of March and October.

Prof Roenneberg added he "a bit pessimistic" about whether it would be abolished.

He said: "If you do polls, it used to be 50/50... but the amount of people that are against the DST is increasing."

"Politicians themselves are not really looking forward to doing that because it's another bureaucratic thing," he added. "It's not a European law, the only thing that EU parliament does is unify the countries to a certain date. Now, the European parliamentarians actually think they are not responsible for changing it, because it used to be a national law.

"The national governments say the European government is the only that can do anything about. Either we all stop it or not at all and the EU throws the ball back and says 'well, we never started this so why should we stop it?'"

Prof Martha Merrow, a colleague of Prof Roenneberg's who presented the evidence on chronobiology to the MEPs, told HuffPost she felt they were swayed by the evidence they heard.

Prof Merrow told the MEPs: "We know that DST increases social jet lag and that chronic social jet lag leads to performance and health deficits."

She recommended a range of measures, including the abolition of DST, which would, she said, decrease it.

E-Fit Programme Draws Up What's Considered To Be The 'Most Beautiful Man And Woman' In Britain

A study commissioned to find the epitome of beauty in the UK has come up with these two characters who in our opinion look like Ross and Monica from Friends:

beautiful

Depressing? Yes. If only because standardised beauty goes against everything HuffPost UK Lifestyle stands for, and because it instantly makes anyone who doesn't look remotely look like that, feel like instant rubbish.

It was pulled together by a computer programme usually used to draw up e-fits of wanted criminals.

The pictures are the result of a two-month-long study led by Dr Chris Solomon, a world expert in facial mapping, that asked people to put together a composite of the perfect face using the EFIT-V PhotoFit software used by UK police.

The software takes into account factors including the thickness of lips, nose length and width, and hairline.

Those results were then judged by another 100 people who rated them for attractiveness, allowing researchers to create these composite pictures showing the archetypal faces of male and female beauty.

Dr Soloman said the study, commissioned by Samsung to mark the launch of its new Galaxy S6 phone, revealed "some interesting results about what Brits consider to be the epitome of beauty".

He said: "It's important to note that these are the idealised faces according to those living in the UK, so a study in Asia or Africa for example would no doubt have different results."

The academic said the study also threw up some differences between men's and women's perceptions of ideal beauty.

He said: "For the male face of beauty, women drew a more feminine face than men - women rate a softer jaw-line, slimmer face, fuller lips and clean-shaven look as the most attractive, compared to the more masculine appearance that is considered the most attractive by men.

"Interestingly, for the female face of beauty women rated a sexier appearance as the most beautiful than their male counterparts - women perceived fuller lips, a slimmer face, larger eyes and higher cheekbones as the most beautiful, more so than the male population."

Former Bodybuilder Dramatically Transforms Lifestyle After Blaming 10,000 Calorie-Per-Day Diet For Giving Him Cancer

After battling liver cancer for five and a half years, former bodybuilder Dean Wharmby was given just three months to live in November.

But after a dramatic lifestyle change, the 39-year-old has said he's feeling better than he has in a long time.

Wharmby previously consumed 10,000 calories per day and drank seven to eight cans of energy drink to help him bulk up and get the energy he needed for workouts.

But he now believes the bodybuilder lifestyle may have contributed to his prognosis.

"I can't say it was the diet for sure, but things like the energy drinks could be contributing factors.

"Red meats - all things we have found out have so many impurities in them now. I think it was a combination of it all," he told the MailOnline.

He'd previously eat an entire packet of bacon in one sitting and snack on high fat foods such as pizza and chips. At his largest, he weighed 20 stone.

When he became unwell five and a half years ago, doctors discovered a cancerous growth.

He turned down chemotherapy in favour of natural remedies, believing it would give him the best chance of survival and being there for his daughter, Scarlett, and girlfriend, Charlotte.

After a year of healthy eating, his tumour disappeared.

But Wharmby admitted his previous habits "crept back in". In 2013, he was rushed back in to hospital and in November 2014, he was given just three months to live after doctors decided his tumour had become too big to operate on.

Feeling better today than I have in a long time! Energy to play and enjoy time, and a nice break from the hard times. Thanks so much to everyone for your support xxx

Posted by Dean Wharmby PT on Friday, 13 March 2015

Wharmby has now set up a Go Fund Me page to help him finance his natural treatment.

"I am trying my hardest to win this fight. I'm using only natural treatments but they aren't cheap. I'm refusing chemo/radio and all the stuff that would simply kill me," he writes on the page.

"I feel so cheeky setting this up but the truth is I am struggling to afford it all and so I guess I'm swallowing my pride because I want to be here for when Scarlett grows up and I want to give Charlotte a loving great life like she deserves."

Album Covers Featuring Lady Gaga And Madonna Offer An Interesting Insight Into The Censorship Of Female Bodies In The Middle East

In a culture where women are expected to keep their flesh under wraps, it comes as no surprise that racy album covers of female pop icons Lady Gaga, Madonna and Kylie are censored in the Middle East.

Religious beliefs and traditions often mean that record labels have to present two types of album cover when they release a record: one presenting the original, more sexualised images of female artists and a separate toned-down version where flesh is covered.

Recent examples, as compiled by the Daily Mail, include Lady Gaga's 'Art Pop' album, where the star's legs are fully covered and the blue ball she's holding has been enlarged to cover the tops of her breasts and Kylie Minogue's infamous 'Fever' album, which sees her photoshopped into more clothing.

But why the need for such strict censorship?

Blogger, Susie of Arabia - who moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2007 from the US - tells HuffPost UK Lifestyle that while the censoring of female bodies happens a lot, it's also quite randomised.

"Magazines, product packaging, CDs, medical textbooks and other items that might feature photos of women are sometimes tampered with," she reveals. "But not always."

The Daily Mail reports that there are "religious police members" also known as the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), who are paid by the government to manually alter covers.

"I've seen black marker applied to dress-up the bare skin of women," Susie adds. "But what's confusing is that it is so inconsistent."

She reveals that in shopping centres, "large prints of women's faces are often pixelated or blurred or even just blanked out, while other times they are left untouched".

Sometimes the faces of children and men faces are blurred out too, but not as frequently as women.

And while she's never received any "satisfactory answers" as to why censorship in Saudi Arabia happens in such a randomised way, often religious beliefs are blamed.

Speaking exclusively to HuffPost UK Lifestyle, Lina Esco from anti-censorship campaign Free The Nipple, reveals that she's "unsurprised" that religion has such an effect on censorship in this case.

"Every culture and religion has a different view of what they think is pornographic," she adds. "I just wonder if this widespread fear of women's bodies will ever go away?"

Meanwhile, Amy Richards who writes for feminist website Soap Box Inc believes that the whole issue is a heavily "gendered".

"I'm opposed to censorship but I think this problem is deeper," she reveals. "It's directed specifically at women so it's a gendered offence, not merely a 'free speech/representation' issue."

"Would they censor male album covers in the same way?" she adds.

But, cultural differences aside, not everyone believes censorship is a bad thing.

In an internet thread showing before and after censorship shots of varying album covers, one person wrote: "Some of the alternate CD covers are a bit hilarious but it's good that their [Middle Eastern] culture is respected.

"After all there are worse things than to wear an additional pullover..."

Granny Hair Is The Hottest Beauty Trend Of Spring/Summer 2015 - Would You Dare To Go Grey?

Grey hair is the latest style to trend on Instagram and we love seeing women getting in on the 'silver fox' look.

For too long grey hair on a woman has been considered a sign that she is letting herself go, so it is refreshing to see a trend that challenges the notion that only youthful looks can be beautiful.

Jean Paul Gaultier was at the forefront of bringing granny glam into fashion. The models at his Autumn/Winter 2011 show stalked the catwalk with their hair coiffured into striking grey beehives. A year later Kelly Osbourne and Kate Moss both sported silver locks and since then everyone from Rihanna to Nicole Richie have been experimenting with the look.

Scroll through the gallery below for the hottest celeb takes on the grey hair trend:

Thinking of trying out the trend for yourself?

FOUR London's colour specialist Brooke Bohan advises that this isn't the easiest look to achieve:

"It can look totally fabulous if done professionally, but beware it is the hardest of all the colours to achieve with no damage to the hair," she cautions.

"The first step is to have a consultation so that a plan of action can be worked out with the client . It will usually take around six months to get hair to the gorgeous grey colour, depending on how much colour build-up the client already has on their hair. You have to grow out as much of the existing colour as possible.

"Once the client is back to as much of their natural colour as possible the technique used is to bleach the hair to bring it up to almost white and then put an ash tone over it.

"Only go to a reputable colour salon as it is very easy to end up with yellow not grey and demarcation lines where the build-up of colour hasn't been properly removed."

"Use a silver shampoo to help brighten and remove yellow unflattering tones that grey hair has a tendency to do, as often grey hair is more dry therefore absorbs things like pollution cigarette smoke dulling down the silver fox making it look like tarnished brass."

John Oliver Wants Us To Give Up Pranking On April Fool's Day

"April Fool's Day is to comedy what St Patrick's Day is to Irish culture," says John Oliver. And it's hard to disagree with that.

He also thinks that people who prank others on April Fool's Day are sociopaths. Which is slightly harder to disagree with... though he's probably not far off.

So will join Oliver in taking the 'Last Week Tonight' 'no prank' pledge?

OK Go Have Made An Advert For The Chinese Furniture Store Red Star Macalline, And It's Brilliant

We're used to hearing about - if not actually seeing - adverts that Western actors and pop stars make in the Far East. Who can forget Suntory Time, for example?

And now OK Go are the latest purveyors of such Eastern wares. Specifically: Chinese furniture.

The resulting commercial is full of the optical illusions that are a trademark of their quirky, brilliant music videos (see below) - and its soundtrack is an electropop-style remix of their hit 'I Won't Let You Down'.

"This is a commercial we did for the Chinese furniture store Red Star Macalline," explain the band on YouTube. "It's a visual reference to our video 'The Writing's on the Wall' but set to a remix of 'I Won't Let You Down' by our very own Dan Konopka. Because sometimes you just make what you want."

And here's a lovely little bonus behind-the-scenes video, to boot:

FryHard Is The London Pop-Up Where All The Food Is Deep-Fried For Some Reason

Have you ever been wondering around London's fashionable East End and wondered why there are no hipster cafés selling exclusively deep-fried goods?

Neither have we, but that's about to change. The people behind Miss Cakehead (Emma Thomas) and London Mess (James Thomlinson) have joined forces to create a menu of more than 100 battered items.

You'll need to get in quick if you fancy a battered battenberg or a deep fried crumpet, because the pop-up will only be open from 2-5 April at Shoreditch's Boxpark.

Here's the Fry Hard menu + daily specials to be announced on Twitter

Posted by Messhead on Friday, March 27, 2015

Available deep fried items include haggis, Snickers, jelly babies, peanut butter cups, Ferrero Rocher, cauliflower, Pepperami and much more.

And if that wasn't enough to stop your heart, they're also offering a deep-fried Easter celebration - a full joint of lamb complete with potatoes and veg - all straight from the fryer.
